From one man's passion emerged one of the oldest and most influential Japanese jeans brands: EDWIN. In the late 1940s, when high-quality jeans were almost unattainable in Japan, Tsunemi Yonehachi recognized a gap in the market – and an opportunity. He began importing original vintage jeans from the USA, meticulously reconditioning them, and reselling them. With this, he laid the foundation for a new denim culture in Japan.
EDWIN was officially founded in 1947. The name is far from coincidental: an anagram of the word Denim, symbolizing creativity, innovation, and passion. Shortly thereafter, EDWIN began producing its own jeans from original American denim – with the aim of not just achieving quality, but rethinking it.
A milestone followed in 1961 when EDWIN made denim history: the brand is considered the inventor of Stone Wash. This process changed jeans forever – it gave them a softer feel, a worn look, and made denim more suitable for everyday wear than ever before. An innovation that is still indispensable in the world of jeans today.
Today, EDWIN combines American jeans DNA with Japanese precision. In addition to classic denim, high-quality Japanese selvedge denim has long been used. The result is authentic jeans with character, technical sophistication, and an exceptional price-performance ratio.
EDWIN stands for progress rooted in tradition – for denim that doesn't follow trends, but shapes them. A brand for those who want to wear history without sacrificing the present.
